Strategic Planning That Delivers Results

Effective Strategic Planning must create clear priorities, provide a roadmap for execution, define success factors, and achieve full stakeholder buy-in.

Most organizations have a strategic plan, but the efficacy of that plan is highly questionable. Not all strategic plans are created equal.

It’s one thing to have a document that is a jumble and a kitchen sink of ideas all appealing to the greater good of the organization.  Yet it’s quite another thing having a strategic plan that can be operationalized to move the business forward, and drive its growth and scaling.

Importance of a Clear Strategic Plan

In today’s fast-paced, ever-changing marketplace, having a clear understanding of what priorities you should act on lends itself to effective execution.  And this is critically important for long-term success.

The word “strategy” is one of the most overused, yet misused words. It originates from the Greek στρατηγία (pronounced stratēgia), which stands for the “art of troop leader; office of general, command, generalship,” per Wikipedia.

In ancient Greece and Rome, “strategy” took on the meaning of plan of war, meaning figuring out ways to dominate and emerge victorious from perilous and uncertain conditions of war.

Today, being strategic for organizations means finding the approaches that will help them not just survive, but thrive – from the go-to-market strategy to product pricing and positioning, to many other facets.

Foundational Strategic Planning

Strategic planning is the foundation that empowers organizations to navigate uncertainty, capitalize on opportunities, and consistently achieve their goals.

How you handle the planning  process is a major factor in the plan’s success.  Unfortunately, most sessions produce dense documents that are full of lofty ideals, but read more like a stream of consciousness.

And then most people don’t read those documents, and they are referenced superficially, and largely forgotten following the planning session.

Worse yet, there will be many key people who will quietly disagree with the final document.  Unfortunately, they will not voice their opposition.

Those strategic plans are doomed to fail. But when the plan fails, so does the long-term success of your organization.

Strategic Planning

is the process of defining an organization’s mission, vision, and core values, and then developing a comprehensive roadmap to guide decision-making, resource allocation, and execution.

The Strategy Ark™ Way

At Strategy Ark, we have a proven method of strategic planning that ensures the plan is truly strategic and it can be the north star guiding the organization’s execution plans for the upcoming fiscal year. The Strategy Ark Way™ puts the organization on the path of winning against competitive pressure and marketplace headwinds. It has certain key elements.

One-on-One Background Research Conversations

At the outset, all session participants have one-on-one background research conversations with Strategy Ark experts in advance of the strategic planning session.

Stakeholder Interviews

Depending on the size and scope of the engagement, certain additional organizational stakeholders might also be interviewed prior to holding the strategic planning session.

Synthesis and Analysis

The findings from all participants interviewed prior to the strategic planning session are synthesized and analyzed, creating “issue buckets” that outline the areas of focus for the organization.

Anonymized Feedback

We take special care to keep certain phrasing that the interviewees have used. At the same time, we make sure to anonymize the feedback. This way, people recognize themselves and their voice in the issue buckets that are shared at the beginning of the strategic planning process.

Session participants are active in crafting the plan

They develop a huge sense of ownership, hence strong buy-in, because they are part of determining what the priorities and their success factors and metrics are.

Presentation of Issue Buckets

When the strategic planning session is held, our Strategy Ark expert facilitating the session will make a presentation on the issue buckets. It is empowering when attendees see their perspectives reflected in these issue buckets.

Crafting Responses to Issue Buckets

Subsequently, there will be a discussion by the session participants to craft a response to each issue bucket. These responses will then become the Strategic Imperatives setting the path of action for the organization for at least the next year.

Determining Strategic Imperatives

Having clarity on what are the Strategic Imperatives for your organization goes a long way to ensure seamless execution. When participants of your Strategic Planning process collaborate on determining Strategic Imperatives, they have greater buy-in.

Prioritizing, Ranking, and Defining Success

Once all the Strategic Imperatives are determined, the strategic planning session participants will jointly rank them by priority. Then they will determine what success looks like for each Strategic Imperative, these will usually be measurable factors.

Outcome of Strategic Planning Session

What’s critically important is the attendees of the Strategic Planning Session will leave with an actionable Strategic Plan that will drive their execution for the year. Likewise, they will all have buy-in because they will have their voice heard from the outset, and they will be full participants in the session (rather than having a few loud voices dominate the session).
